"My Prerogative" is a 1988 single by R&B singer Bobby Brown (see 1988 in music). The second single from Brown's second solo album Don't Be Cruel, "My Prerogative" was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and reached number six on the UK Top 40. It is among Brown's most successful recordings. The song is considered a New Jack Swing anthem and has been covered by many artists - none of which have repeated the success of the original version. The second most successful covered song was by Britney Spears.

[edit] Overview
"My Prerogative" was written by Brown with new jack swing pioneer Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin, the song's producer. The song's lyrics reflected Brown's bad-boy image, and were representative of the new jack swing sound popular in the late-1980s. Following the top ten success of "Don't Be Cruel," "My Prerogative" earned Gold sales, and became Brown's first and only number one single on the U.S Billboard Hot 100. The track was also a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Black Singles Chart, and reached the top ten of the Hot Dance Club Play chart.
On the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Bobby Brown's original version rocketed 61-45, the week of November 5, 1988, just as "Don't Be Cruel" was descending from its two-week stint in the Top 10. "My Prerogative" steadily climbed the charts, and was stalled at #2 for three weeks, under Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", before it finally reached #1 the week of January 14, 1989, becoming the first new #1 of 1989.

"My Prerogative" has been covered by several artists including indie/punk band Selfish Cunt and pop artist Britney Spears. The music video for Britney Spears's version of "My Prerogative" was directed by Jake Nava. It depicts a wedding reception party for Britney Spears and her real-life husband at the time Kevin Federline. Her music video was chosen by Rolling Stone magazine as the best music video of 2004, whereas MuchMusic's Fromage chose it as the worst music video of 2004.
[edit] Music Video
The music video begins with Britney navigating her car up a treacherous mountain road while reciting the opening lines of the song. The music stops for a moment as she crashes a party at a luxurious mansion and drives the car into a swimming pool. Britney then emerges from the water, singing and sitting on the hood of the submerged car. The next scene sees Britney changing into a dominatrix outfit and teasing her then-fiancé Kevin Federline in some kind of viewing room. The video ends with Britney and Kevin tying the knot in a gothic wedding ceremony (Britney's older brother Bryan Spears is an extra in this scene) and celebrating their new marriage at a dance club. Sporadically mixed in among the video are scenes of an underwear-clad Britney rolling around on a bed.
The house featured in the video can also be seen in the films Halloween: H20 and Scream 3.
[edit] Chart information
Britney Spears's cover was not successful in the United States, failing to chart in the Billboard Hot 100, managing only to peak at number one on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles. However, her version did peak at number two on the Hot Digital Tracks, and at number one or the top ten in several countries.
In Latin America the single become Spears's third entry in the Latin America Top 40 since the creation of the chart in May 2004, the single debuted at #18 in November 2004[1], in its fifth week the single peaked at number 10[2] and eventually spent fourteen weeks on the chart. The single was less successful than her previous song, Everytime, which peaked at number nine.
In the UK it was released competitively against other acts including Usher & Alicia Keys' My Boo (No. 5), rival Christina Aguilera's own cover of Car Wash (No. 4), Destiny's Child's Lose My Breath (No. 2) and Eminem's controversial Just Lose It at No. 1. It gained considerable attention as it was the second instance where all top 5 positions were new entries (after October 1998), but the first time it was all American artists. It has sold 180,000 copies in that country. This single has sold worldwide 1.1 milions copies.[3]
