[edit] Background and release

Despite the huge commercial success and relatively recent release of the album's first single "SexyBack", radio stations in various cities across the U.S. began spinning the cut in mid-August 2006. In a similar fashion to "SexyBack", Timbaland contributes limited background vocals to the song, and the song also features a rap verse from T.I.. Reception of the song has been very positive, with many fans and critics preferring it over "SexyBack." The song received a rare 5/5 star rating from Pitchfork Media and was subsequently named their number one song of 2006.[1] Timberlake performed "My Love" and "SexyBack" as a medley for the opening of the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, and again for the MTV Europe Music Awards 2006, which he also hosted. He also performed the song on Saturday Night Live.

Timberlake became the first male artist since Usher in 2004 to have two consecutive number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The song became Timberlake's second number one single on the Hot 100, and T.I.'s first.

"My Love" is Timberlake's second top 10 single in a row in the Latin America Top 40.

In the iTunes Music Store, there are alternative versions of the single cover. The spot on the cover is different for each release:

  • Red - Single & Instrumental
  • Green - My Love: The Remixes EP
  • Blue - PodPak Single (with single version, a remix [Mike D Bass Mix], and music video)

[edit] Music video

The music video, directed by Paul Hunter, premiered on October 12. It includes the prelude to the song (Let Me Talk To You) which features the song's (and album) producer Timbaland. At the beginning it shows Timberlake in what seems to be a studio filled with white bars of light dancing with one of the many girls in the video. Then it goes on to show Timbaland and Timberlake rapping the prelude. Afterwards, the screen turns white and shows a distant Timberlake rotating coming towards the screen. He stops rotating once he is straight and starts singing the first verse.

At random points in the video, the screen changes colors from black to white and show Timberlake with his dancers (the same ones who helped him out at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards), and different girls he seems to be singing the song to. While Timberlake is standing still in random parts of the video, the object he is talking about in the verse starts floating past him towards the screen. One example is when T.I. is rapping in front of a black screen, rubberbands start to float past him through the air towards the screen, which refers to his nickname as the "Rubberband Man" that he and his fans had given him. Other examples are the start of the first verse, Timberlake sings "If I wrote you a symphony", while having violins float past him toward the screen, and the start of the second verse, Timberlake sings "If I wrote you a love note", while sheets of paper and black pens float past him toward the screen. The woman dancing in the "two-person-shots" is Michele Martinez.

There are three versions of the video. The first version released was the "Let Me Talk to You/My Love", which is 6:12. The second version is "My Love" album edit only. The last re-edit version is the "Let Me Talk to You/My Love" with a shortened interlude in the video.

[edit] Chart performance

"My Love" peaked at number-one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in its eighth week, the same period which "Sexyback" took to rise to the summit. "My Love" spent three consecutive weeks at number-one on the Hot 100, and became Timberlake's second consecutive, number-one single and T.I's first on this chart. Also, Timberlake became the first male artist since Usher in 2004 to have two consecutive number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to the Hot 100, "My Love" also reached number-one on the following Billboard charts: Pop 100, Hot Dance Airplay and top 40 mainstream charts, and has peaked at number-three on the Rhythmic Top 40. Also, on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, "My Love" peaked at number-two to become Timberlake's most successful single on this chart. "My Love" also performed moderately well on the Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks charts, peaking at number-fifteen and number twenty-nine respectively.

In the UK, "My Love" debuted at number-fourteen on the UK Singles Chart, one week prior to its physical release, and ascended to its peak the following week at number-two, to become Timberlake's fourth single to peak at number-two. "My Love" has spent an overall nineteen weeks within the top 75, spending four of those within the top ten. In Australia, "My Love" debuted at number-four on the Australian ARIA singles chart, and peaked at number-three a week later, and was certified Platinum by ARIA, spending a total of twenty-four weeks in the top 50. In New Zealand, "My Love" debuted at number twenty-five and eventually peaked at number-one for five non-consecutive weeks, to become Timberlake's second #1 single. In Sweden, "My Love" debuted at number twenty-six and later peaked at number-two for three non-consecutive weeks, spending twenty-three weeks on the chart, to become Timberlake's most successful single there, ahead of "SexyBack", which peaked at number-four.

"My Love" has also become a top five hit in Germany, where it has peaked at number-four, becoming Timberlake's second top five hit, and Austria, where it has peaked at number-six, and where it is his second biggest hit behind a tie between "SexyBack" and "What Goes Around... Comes Around" which have both peaked at number-five. In France, "My Love" debuted at number-eighteen and later peaked at number-ten to become his second consecutive and third top ten hit there overall.

On the United World Chart, "My Love" peaked at number-one for three consecutive weeks becoming his second consecutive number-one single, and has garnered more than 5 million points. "My Love" remains one of Timberlake's most successful singles to date. "My Love" was the successor to Timberlake's previous single "Sexyback" which had topped the united world chart for ten consecutive weeks before being replaced by "My Love". "My Love" was then replaced by Beyonce's "Irreplaceable".
