The Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the AIB Munster Club Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition played between the six best senior hurling clubs in the province of Munster in Ireland. [edit] Overview
[edit] History
The Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship was inaugurated in 1964 for the champions of each of the six counties of Munster. The inaugural championship was not completed until Easter Sunday, 1966. In later years the championship was not always completed in the year it was supposed to be. The winning team is presented with the O'Neill Cup. This trophy was donated by the Sarsfield's club in Cork in 1972 to commemorate Bill O'Neill, a founder of the club in 1903.
[edit] Format
The Munster Club Hurling Championship is run on a knock-out basis in which once a team loses they are eliminated from the competition. All six counties in Munster - Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford - participate in the championship and are represented by their respective county senior hurling champions. An open draw is made in which two of these clubs automatically qualify for the semi-final stage of the competition. Four other teams play in two separate "quarter-finals" with the winners of each joining the other two teams at the semi-final stage. The winners of the Munster Club Hurling Final automatically qualify for the semi-finals of the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship series of games.
