Munqati (lit. broken) is an Islamic term used in the so-called 'science' of Hadith (the doings and sayings of Muhammad); a munqati hadith is one in which the historical chain of people reporting the hadith is incomplete.

If an isnad (chain of reporters) lacks the Sahaba link, meaning none of the prophet's companions are mentioned, it is called a Mursal. However, if it is broken somewhere else, it is called Munqati^[1].

A hadith that seems to be muttasil (continuous), but one of the reporters is known to have never heard hadiths from his immediate authority, even though they lived at the same time, the isnad is Munqati.

It is also applied when someone says "a man told me" ^[2].

Sunnis differentiate between a Mursal and a Munqati, viewing the Munqati as weaker.

Shia'a do not differentiate between a Mursal and a Munqati isnad.
