[edit] License tagging for Image:State Park Map.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:State Park Map.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 11:09, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

I received the following email from Richard Shearer (WebMaster) for the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources Website: "It is our Policy that anyone can use our images as long as they credit the image to us or whoever we have credited the image, however some images on the site are Copy Protected and can not be used. Images that are copy protected have the Right-Click disabled on the image." Dated July 13, 2006. --Mphamilton 19:55, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Thank you. I am a WV State Park freak. I hope to get as many images as possible on each park/forest uploaded (with permission). --Mphamilton 21:49, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:WhgCityHall.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:WhgCityHall.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. youngamerican (ahoy-hoy) 17:39, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your uploads

Please stop uploading copyrighted images with the template NORIGHTSRESERVED. Most images on the internet are copyrighted and are not appropriate for uploading to Wikipedia. Images found on websites or on an image search engine should not be uploaded to Wikipedia. Users who upload content with false license declarations, or who repeatedly upload images with no license declaration, may be blocked. Please see how to upload images. feydey 21:54, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

I totally second that. - CrazyRougeian talk/email 15:25, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
The images I uploaded are NOT copyrighted, were specifically granted for use in the public domain, or come from state/federal resources which hold no copyright. I seem to have tagged them in error, but wikipedia should figure that out for itself. --Mphamilton 19:42, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
I think that only applies to the federal gov't. youngamerican (ahoy-hoy) 19:14, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
At your request, I have submitted a request to the Webmaster of the WV Supreme Court of Appeals website to seek clarification. Hopefully, these images of the justices and the court are in the public domain. If not, I have requested permission to post these images (and others from the website) to Wikipedia. Thank you for your patience.--Mphamilton 21:47, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Even that, in some cases, might not be good enough to satisfy the free license or fair use requirements of Wikipedia, but I am absolutely not an expert. Check out Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ for more. I think the Court Justices will fly, however, if tagged as fair use for now. A followup will uncover under what license WV release's its government-produced images. youngamerican (ahoy-hoy) 12:04, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Just so you know, if you have an image that you've specifically received permission for, you need to forward that permission to permissions at wikimedia dot org. If you don't forward the email along, the image will probably be deleted again. Also, please note that the person granting permission needs to specifically state that the image is released into the public domain or under a free license. [edit] Edit summaries

Under the main edit text, you will see a box that says "edit summary." With each edit, try to remember to put a brief description of what you have done to the article with each edit. It helps out other editors and can help you keep track of what you have done on a given article. Cheers. youngamerican (ahoy-hoy) 14:12, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I thought I had been to a great extent. Are you referring to any particular edit? --Mphamilton 14:56, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
You have been putting good explanations on the talk pages, but I am refering to the edit summaries, which are a bit different. Underneath the area where you type in edits, you should see something like this:
Image:Edit Summary-2.png
That is where you put edit summaries. For more information, check out Edit summaries. Cheers and keep up the good work. youngamerican (ahoy-hoy) 15:03, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Forgive my ignorance, but you're saying that for every edit made there can be an individual edit summary? I thought that it was one particular summary that covers the entire section or article. Thanks for your clarification. --Mphamilton 15:10, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Yup. You're getting the hang of it. youngamerican (ahoy-hoy) 15:20, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:016 13A.jpg

Actually, the picture was taken from the balcony of the room in former Best Western hotel (the hotel changed ownership, and I don't remember it's new name). Is there a restaurant there now? Just want to make sure there was no mistake in your description. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:07, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for the misidentification. The Riverside Restaurant is on the first floor of the hotel which is now known as the Wheeling Inn. The Riverside Restaurant has been a part of that hotel for over ten years. It would have provided the same result from the restaurant's vantage point.--Mphamilton 16:10, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I think I remember the restaurant terrace, although the restaurant was closed at the time of my visit. The picture was taken from a room located one or two floors above the restaurant. I realize it wouldn't make a lot of difference. The only thing I regret is that damn balcony that ruined a perfect picture :(—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 16:57, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
I have corrected the image description to include your clarification. Thanks, as always! --Mphamilton 17:00, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ohio 2nd congressional district election, 2006

I've removed your comment on the talk/discussion page of this article. Talk pages aren't for recording that one did an edit on an article. The History page is sufficient for that. Put the information about what you did -- and you can be brief unless you think the edit is controversial, in which case, DO explain a bit -- in the edit summary (see above).

What WOULD be useful is if you would go back to the article and add a link to your source. Without a source, your information isn't verifiable, and if it isn't verifiable, shouldn't be in a wikipedia article. John Broughton 18:35, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

To clarify, I did not know that the "discussion" page restricted certain content. I noticed that a number of the claims made in the article lacked sources as well. Now, I will certainly provide you with one IF you decide to post your sources as well.
Whenever I add something to an article, I try to always add a source, since that is one of the best ways to make sure the addition remains in the article (or that someone improves it by checking the orginal source. If you come across anything where that isn't the case, please let me know.
As far as the "discussion" page, people are free to put whatever they want on it. I removed your comment because I didn't want anyone new to wikipedia to get into that habit - it's a waste of the editor's time to do log entries on that page, and a waste of readers' time to read log entries. The History page is a log, and a much better one, since it allows comparisons of article versions to check that what a person said he/she did is what actually was done.
Finally, thank you for adding the source to the polling information - very helpful. John Broughton 14:40, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
P.S. It may seem odd to add a date/time stamp and your name when putting a comment on your own discussion page (using the standard four tildes), but that's also the norm in wikipedia.

[edit] Pages containing nothing but an image

Could you please stop making these pages, at least until you have more information? (The pages will probably be deleted per WP:CSD A1 or A3 for having no context or content, but you can recreate them as long as you have enough information to make a stub.) --ais523 08:37, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

These images are links from a list of places on the National Register of Historical Places in Wheeling, WV. I didn't know how else to display these images without direct links. I fully intend on providing information on the individual images, but they are properly linked, and I do not have the time at the moment to add the additional information. --Mphamilton 08:40, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
For the time being, there's probably no need to display the images. They're Public Domain, not fair use, so they're unlikely to be deleted. You could keep a list of them on a user subpage (for instance, User:Mphamilton/List of images from Wheeling) if you're worried about losing track of them. --ais523 08:45, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
I have added links to the overall county list, itself. That should suffice for the time being. I ask for your patience in the matter. Thanks --Mphamilton 08:47, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Table

In my browser, with the last changes I made, 1882 is two lines tall - so you have two people showing up in 1882. One is on the first line for 1882 and one is on the second (and rowspans below it). Is that what you wanted? --Kainaw (talk) 18:39, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

You are correct - there is an issue with IE. An alternative is to have a blank "year" below 1882. Then, you can force the line between Patton and the next guy to be right where the line between 1882 and the blank box appear. --Kainaw (talk) 19:01, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Table suggestion, 2nd

My reply to your (User talk:Mphamilton) comment on my talk page:

Sorry, but you can't have the cells for "James French Patton" and "Adam Snyder" in the same row (1882), and then extend "Adam Snyder" to another table row, because other people's cells extends to row of 1882 and not beyond. Rows cannot (I think) overlap this way.

You could force the table elements (tags) any way you want to. But, such a table would be inaccessible for some users (e.g. screen readers). Also, my guess is that the current table is very difficult for these users.

I will give the table some thought on how to re-organise it to have the appearance you are looking for.

You might consider using lists. For example:

  • 1873-1875
    1. Alpheus F. Haymond
    2. John S. Huffmann
    3. James Paull
    4. Charles P.T. Moore
  • 1876
    1. Alpheus F. Haymond
    2. Matthew Edmiston (new)
    3. Thomas C. Green (new)
    4. Charles P.T. Moore

Sorry MP, I have tried six different ways to Sunday to have James French Patton in both 1881 and 1882 while keeping Adam C. Snyder 1882 I but have been unable to make it work. [edit] An accusation against me

[edit] Posted by user User talk:71.79.37.118

"Below is a message from mphamilton. this type of bully behavior is completely unacceptable and should not be tolerated. mphamilton, you are the one who is violating the wikiproject guidelines. i simply was trying to revert back to updated information, and may have done it the wrong way, but it has since been corrected. you, on the other hand have reverted my posts to point of vandalism. please stop. thank you.

[edit] Vandalism I haven't vandalized anything. YOU HAVE. You are the one removing clearly permissible edits simply because you are obsessed with homosexuality. Now, if you can input your information in accordance with the Wikiproject guidelines, which are very clear, then fine. But, until you learn them, I will revert EVERY EDIT that you make. See. I'm not afraid to sign my name to my actions. But, it seems you are a coward (like most Nazarenes). Mphamilton 18:12, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

If you have such a strong belief, 71.70.37.118, in the Nazarene's statements on human sexuality, then DO THE RESEARCH, provide a link/reference, and an EXACT date. "Sometime between 2004 and 2006" is lazy and unacceptable. I have reverted your changes yet again. Mphamilton 20:37, 19 March 2007 (UTC)"

[edit] My defense

In my defense, the above ANONYMOUS user has consistently made major changes to the Church of the Nazarene article while giving no consideration to weeks or even months of edits by others. The anonymous user has become so obsessed with the Church of the Nazarene's position on homosexuality that he/she blatantly ignores the unbiased edits of others. Personally, I made no changes to the sections originally authored by the anonymous user until the last two days. My participation, involvement, and action with the Church of the Nazarene article has been exemplary until this point. As a former Nazarene, I wanted to make sure that the article was presented in line with the Wikipedia NPOV policy. The anonymous user did not consider the NPOV policy. I encourage any reader to browse the various and even extensive edits I have made to the Church of the Nazarene article to examine my claims. Mphamilton 03:20, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] River crests/floods

Hi Mphamilton, I posted a message at the rivers project but thought I'd post a message here, too. Since the crest at Wheeling occurred as part of a significant flood (I think it affected Parkersburg, too, if I'm not mistaken), the information about the crest would probably best be covered in an article about the flood. I've considered inquiring at Wikpedia Meteorology myself about the best way to approach (and title) an article about the 1985 flood in eastern and central WV, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It does seem like the meteorology project is the place to go for questions about articles related to floods. And I think an article about the flood of '36 would be welcomed -- it looks like there is a lot of recentism regarding weather events on Wikipedia. Best wishes --Malepheasant 08:25, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

  • In that case I think a section on the Wheeling Creek article would probably be best. --Malepheasant 19:17, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] West Virginia State Senators

Just so ya know. :) You've been creating many articles on WV State Senators. Great. :) But. :) You've been putting the category in as West Virginia Senate. It should be Category:West Virginia State Senators. I fixed the ones you've already created. And I started a Category:Presidents of the West Virginia State Senate cat as well. --WoohookittyWoohoo! 08:39, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WV Shield

Hey, I was curious what the shield was that you uploaded for West Virginia. --myselfalso 21:23, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Can you upload it so I can see what you made? I'm curious to see what it is. --myselfalso 17:57, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion debate on ZIP codes

An {{afd}} tag has been placed on List of 56 ZIP codes and many other pages, requesting that they be deleted from Wikipedia. All Wikipedians can join the debate at Articles for deletion, where articles asserted to be inappropriate to Wikipedia are discussed. You are encouraged to submit your opinion, and remember that Articles for Deletion debates are not a vote. Please do not remove the deletion tag yourself, but don't feel inhibited from editing the article, particularly if doing so makes it clear that it is a useful contribution to an encyclopaedia. [edit] Zip Codes

That was a really good idea. I like it! I changed my vote from Keep to Move to WikiSource. If it doesn't get moved, let me know as I saved all the pages the last time the state-by-state pages got deleted. Take Care and Enjoy that great day out there (I'm in VA, so I am having the same weather)....SVRTVDude (VT) 19:20, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:GovernorGore.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:GovernorGore.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:09, 5 June 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 16:09, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:OhioCountyBallotImage1.jpg listed for deletion

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:OhioCountyBallotImage1.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:TheLastFiveYears.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:TheLastFiveYears.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG 11:14, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:HawksNestSP.gif

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:HawksNestSP.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Shell babelfish 23:35, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Church of the Nazarene-Articles of Faith

A tag has been placed on Church of the Nazarene-Articles of Faith, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per speedy deletion criterion A1.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] {{US-judge-stub2}}

Hi - a stub template or category which you created has been nominated for deletion or renaming at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. The stub type, which was not proposed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, does not meet the standard requirements for a stub type, either through being incorrectly named, ambiguously scoped, or through failure to meet standards relating to the current stub hierarchy or likely size, as explained at Wikipedia:Stub. Please feel free to make any comments at WP:SFD regarding this stub type, and in future, please consider proposing new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 01:31, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:WheelingSeal.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:WheelingSeal.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 15:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
