The Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia, is an art museum adjacent to the Augusta Riverwalk and the Savannah River. Before the museum opened to the public in 1992, it started as a non-profit organization in 1985 and was named in honor of Morris' parents. In 1989, Morris bought 230 pictures for the museum from Robert P. Coggins and in 1990, Keith Classuen became the museum director. On September 26, 1992, the museum opened to the public and over 10,000 people visited the museum in the first 2 months. The museum is dedicated to the collection and exhibition of art and artists of the American South. The museum was founded by William S. Morris, III and the museum has more than 3,000 works in its permanent collection. The museum hosts changing exhibitions, educational programs, musical events, and hands-on art programs.
