Cumberland Island National Seashore preserves most of Cumberland Island in Camden County, Georgia, the largest of Georgia's barrier islands. The park expands through 36,415 acres and reported over 44,000 visitors in 2006.[1] The human history of the island spans back 4,000 years and maintains 87 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The island is home to a wide array of wildlife, including endangered or threatened species of American Oystercatchers, Least Terns, and Wilson’s Plovers, a population of feral horses, and is a significant nesting ground for sea turtles. The island is accessible only by boat so the National Park Service operates a ferry for visitors.
The island is only accessible by boat. The visitor center and boat access to the island are located in the town of St. Marys, Georgia. Public access via the ferry is limited, reservations are recommended. Camping is allowed in the seashore. The 9,886 acre Cumberland Island Wilderness is part of the seashore.

The national seashore was authorized by Congress on October 23, 1972, and is administered by the National Park Service. The wilderness area was designated on September 8, 1982. The seashore was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1986.
