Montgomery Community College (North Carolina)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Montgomery Community College is a public two-year community college chartered in 1967 as Montgomery Technical Institute in Troy, North Carolina. It is part of the 59-campus North Carolina Community College System.

The school received its accreditation in December, 1978, from both the State Board of Education Department of Community Colleges and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Montgomery Technical Institute became Montgomery Technical College in 1983, and in September 1987, the name was officially changed to Montgomery Community College.

As of 2007, the campus includes facilities of approximately 125,000 square feet on 153 acres of land. The campus library includes the Gelynda & Arron Capel Pottery Collection, containing ancient pottery pieces, as well as modern functional and decorative pottery.[1]

The college offers programs of study within five areas, most offering a choice among an associate's degree, a diploma, or a certificate:

  • Arts & sciences, including two college-transfer degrees for those wishing to continue study at a four-year college, a general education degree, and a human services technology degree for those seeking careers in social, community, and educational services
  • Business technology, including accounting, networking technology, and office systems technology
  • Commercial technology, including autobody repair, forest management, gunsmithing, professional crafts: clay, and taxidermy, and
  • Health/public services technology, including criminal justice and law enforcement, culinary technology, dental assistant, early childhood education, and practical nursing.[2]

Like most community colleges, the school offers developmental studies courses for those who need to prepare for advanced college work, as well as continuing education courses for business or pleasure. Distance learning programs include options using the North Carolina Information Highway, Internet-based online courses, Ed2Go and Eduwhere.
