Monte Barrett (born May 26, 1971, Greenville, North Carolina) is a professional heavyweight boxer.
He was 37-3 as an amateur.
Barrett doesn't have a particularly distinct style or a lot of power, but has an above average chin and good work ethics and finds ways to craftily win fights.
As a professional, he lost his first against Lance Whitaker on August 28th, 1998, after 21 consecutive wins. On July 15, 2000, Barrett rose 5 times against future IBF and IBO World Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, but ultimately retreated after 3 KOs in the 7th round alone.
Later Barrett locked horns in a memorable battle with hard-punching but chinny Joe Mesi, which was an exciting see-saw battle in which Mesi almost had Barrett out in the 4th round, but Barrett battled back spiritedly and nearly took the undefeated Mesi out in the 7th round. Both fighters went down in the respective rounds, but Mesi won by decision after the 10 rounds were over.
Barrett defeated prospects Dominick Guinn and Owen Beck, both of whom were undefeated at the time, to line up the title shot. He lost his title match against the WBC Heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman by unanimous decision after 12 rounds.
Despite his loss, he fought WBA Heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev in October at Rosemont, Illinois in what was billed as Valuev's "coming out party" to American boxing fans. Barrett lost via technical knockout in the 11th round. Barrett was knocked down in the eighth and eleventh rounds, but managed to get up. After being knocked down for the second time in the eleventh round, his trainer James Ali Basheer jumped into the ring to stop the fight.
Barrett was shockingly upset by knockout in July 2007 by Cliff Couser.
