Datuk Seri Ir. Haji Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (born March 17, 1957) is the 10th and current Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of the state of Perak, in Malaysia. Nizar is the secretary of the PAS political party for the state of Perak. He was announced as the Menteri Besar of Perak on March 12, 2008 by the Regent of Perak, Raja Nazrin Shah[1], and sworn in on March 17, 2008 at Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar. Nizar is the first person not part of the Barisan National coalition party to hold such a post in Perak. The opposition coalition consisting of PAS, Democratic Action Party (DAP), and Parti Keadilan Rakyat had earlier won in the March 8 Malaysian general election after winning 31 out of 59 state electorates.

The appointment of Nizar created a minor stir within the opposition coalition after the DAP's central executive committee ordered Perak DAP state assemblymen to boycott the swearing-in ceremony to be held on March 13, 2008. DAP's chairman, Lim Kit Siang, has since apologised and stated that he did not mean to disrespect the decision of the sultan and the regent of Perak.[2] Following the resolution of this matter, all the state assemblymen from PKR, PAS and DAP (including Lim Kit Siang) attended the Menteri Besar swearing-in ceremony in support of Nizar.[3]

Nizar is an engineering graduate from Aston University in Birmingham, United Kingdom.[4] He took over the chief minister post from Tajol Rosli of Barisan Nasional. Nizar is the son of a Malay father and a Chinese mother, who was raised in a Malay-Muslim household from birth.[5]
