Minnesota State Highway 51, also known as Snelling Avenue for most of its length is a highway in Minnesota. It is 11 miles in length. It is also not to be confused with the nearby Ramsey County Road 51.
Highway 51 begins at a junction in Arden Hills with Interstate 694. The interchange with I-694 is also shared with the westbound interchange for U.S. Route 10, and this interchange has lane drops that cause traffic congestion on I-694. In response, MNDOT is eventually planning to rebuild I-694 through this area, including the interchange. This expansion is not expected to start until 2012, though.[2]
For most of Highway 51's length through Arden Hills and Roseville, it is an expressway with signalized intersections. As it enters Falcon Heights, it passes along the east side of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, making it a very busy thoroughfare during the State Fair season. After crossing over two railroad lines and entering St. Paul, Snelling Avenue passes through the Midway area and continues south into the Highland Park area. Highway 51 leaves Snelling Avenue and turns east at Montreal Avenue, ending at Minnesota State Highway 5.
From north to south, the route adjoins the campuses of Bethel University, Northwestern College, Hamline University and Macalester College.
