Minami-ku (南区?) is one of the 18 wards of the city of Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The character for this ward means South. Its name derives from the fact that it is located south of Naka-ku (However, since its naming, Nishi-ku (West Ward) has become a separate ward from Naka-ku (Center Ward), and thus, when viewed in comparison with the present-day Naka-ku, Minami-ku is located in the west).
[edit] Geography
The Keihin Electric Express (know as the Keikyuu-sen [Keikyuu Line]) and the Kamakura highway both cut across the middle of the ward from North to South. The Yokohama Municipal Subway also runs underneath the Kamakura Highway. Additionally, the Shuto Expressway Karibasen runs in the North, and the Yokohama Yokosuka Highway runs in the West. Large buildings and apartment complexes are built up along the area surrounding the Kansen Highway, and all other parts of the ward are residential areas. The Oooka River runs through the ward, and in Spring many costal cherry blossoms come into full bloom. Gumyoji, located in the southern part of the ward, is famous for having the oldest temple in Yokohama City - Gumyoji Temple, otherwise known as Gumyoji Kannon (a Buddhist deity of mercy).
