[edit] Early Life
Miguel was born in Mexico and moved to the United States when he was in second grade. Although some claim the culture shock for him was almost deadly, others think that he took the change quite well, picking up on the language and customs rather quickly. As a consequence of his quick learning of the language, though, he had to push "unimportant" memories of his childhood out, thus rendering his childhood as a vague fractalized blur, almost amnesia-like. When asked about his childhood, he often gives short, generic summaries of what he is mostly sure is true. This, however, does not bother him, as he mostly optimistic and future-oriented rather than focusing on the past that could have been.
[edit] Southern Culture
In 1998, he moved from Wisconsin to North Carolina where he has (unfortunately) been residing ever since. While he does admit that there could be worse places, he is often annoyed at the stereotypical "Southern Culture." Although southern people are often portrayed as "hospitable," there are a few caveats to be aware of with this portrayal.
Firstly, Caucasians are mostly only hospitable to other Caucasians. Although claims racism has "disappeared" from the southern United States are common, in practice, this is much less true. Although Jim Crow laws are illegal now, of course, racism is still deeply imbedded into the culture, although it is more "hidden" now. That is, a Caucasian is less likely to yell "Get off my property, dirty nigger!" But it is common to overhear things like "I don't trust dirty niggers..." in other people's casual conversations in public places such as restaurants and the like.
