[edit] Plot
The novel concerns a group of tourists who become trapped in an underground cavern after a fire destroys the elevator exits. Darcy, one of the cave's guides, takes a small group of five people with her and attempts to force their way out of the cavern by breaking through a portion of the cave that had been walled up years before, telling the rest of the group that she will send reinforcements for everyone else once she is able to get outside. But when they attempt to breach the wall they accidentally release an inbred family of cannibalistic savages that has been secretly living in the cave for over half a century.
