Middlesbrough were again sponsored by BT Cellnet for the 2000-01 season, the team's strip was produced by Errea. The home shirt consisted of a red shirt with white hoop, red shorts and red socks with white trim. The away strip consisted of a black shirt with red and white stripes in the middle, plain black shorts and black socks.^[1]

Boro only win 2 of their opening 16 games, hitting bottom of the league.

Boro have to wait until December 16 for their first home win of the season.

Terry Venables brought in in December to help Bryan Robson. Boro pick up their form, and go on an unbeaten run for 10 league games.

Middlesbrough knocked out of both domestic cups by Wimbledon

The good run of form continues to the end of the season and Boro finish 14th. Steve Gibson decides a change of management is needed and Robson leaves the club. Steve McClaren is confirmed as the next manager.
