[edit] Early life

Mick Cashman was born in Blackrock, just outside Cork in 1931. He was educated locally and showed great skill at hurling as a child. In later years he married Ann Brohan, a sister of Jimmy Brohan who was a team-mate of Cashman’s and one of Cork’s greatest-ever hurlers.

[edit] Playing career

[edit] Club

Cashman played his club hurling with the famous Blackrock club and enjoyed some success. In 1956 he captained the club to their first senior county title in twenty-five years. Six years later in 1961 Cashman lead ‘the Rockies’ to a second county title.

[edit] Inter-county

Cashman first came to prominence on the Cork senior hurling team in the 1950s, however, he found it difficult to find a place on the team. He came on as a substitute to win a National Hurling League medal in 1953 and he won a Munster medal in 1954 as a half-back. Cashman, however, played no part in Cork’s subsequent All-Ireland final victory over Wexford. Cork lost their provincial crown in 1955, however, in 1956 Cashman succeeded Dave Creedon as first-choice goalkeeper on the senior hurling team. He won a second Munster medal that year but lost out on an All-Ireland medal as Wexford denied Cork the title in one of the greatest finals of all-time. In 1957 Cashman was appointed captain of his native-county’s senior hurling team. Once again Cork reached the Munster final, however, they were defeated by Waterford. Cashman’s side contested three consecutive provincial finals in 1959, 1960 and 1961, however, he ended up on the losing side on every occasion. He served as captain of the team again in 1962, however, he retired following Cork’s early exit from the championship.

In spite of Cashman’s inter-county hurling career coinciding with a down-turn in Cork’s hurling fortunes, he did enjoy much success with Munster in the Railway Cup competition. He won Railway Cup medals in 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1963.

[edit] Retirement

In retirement from hurling Cashman came to be regarded as one of Cork’s greatest players. Although he never won an All-Ireland medal himself he did see his two sons have much success on the hurling field with Blackrock and Cork. In 1986 both Jim and Tom Cashman won All-Ireland medals with Cork.

Mick Cashman died in 1990.
