Michael Domenec

Michael Domenec (1816 – 1878) was the second Roman Catholic Bishop of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
Michael Domenec was born December 27, 1816 in Ruez, near Tarragona, Spain. He was educated in Reus until 1832, when his family fled to France for political reasons. There he studied at the College of Montolieu in Adus, France, where he joined the Congregation of the Missions, also known as the Vincentians. He lived at the Vincentian motherhouse in Paris until in 1838 he answered an appeal for missionaries in the United States and he was ordained a priest on 30 June 1839 at St. Mary's of the Barrens, a seminary in Missouri.
On 9 December 1860 Domenec was ordained bishop of Pittsburgh, a post he held for 16 years. Domenec steered the diocese through the tumultuous years of the Civil War. Financial difficulties emerged in the Diocese of Pittsburgh during his tenure. In 1876, Domenec was named as the first and only bishop of the Diocese of Allegheny, which was created out of the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1876, and suppressed in 1889.
Domenec resigned the episcopacy in 1877, and returned to Spain. He died on 7 January 1878 in his native Spain, as he returned from a meeting at the Vatican. He is buried in the Cathedral of Tarragona.
