[edit] History
Miamisburg High School was built in 1972 and originally featured the controversial but then-popular open plan concept with three classroom pods forming a triangle around a center core and a huge 16,000 sf commons area, the largest "room" in the Miamisburg school district.
The academic pods were completely reprogrammed to follow a more traditional layout within just a few years and received its first addition in 1980. This 42,000 square foot expansion included a modern, 32,000 sf two-story gymnasium complex, locker rooms and fine arts classrooms. In 1982, a 16,000 sf classroom wing was added which gave the school 16 more classrooms.
Rounding out these expansions to the facility is a modern, 29,000 square foot, two-story, glass and brick addition put on the front of Miamisburg High School in 1993. This new classroom wing includes 21 classrooms, new administrative suites, a third teachers lounge, 5 science labs and a stunning, natural light-flooded, glass-encased Atrium which acts as a student commons area and a main entrance hall.
The school encompasses 186,375 square feet of floor space and has a 100% capacity mark set at 1,372 students. The school currently has over 1,600. There have been many high schools in Miamisburg but they have all been abandoned, relocated, or torn down. Miamisburg City Schools had plans to build a new, 2000-student comprehensive high school but voters turned down the idea for many years forcing the distrcit to scrap their plans. Throughout the 2000s the high school has been faced with many overcrowding problems.
On November 14, 2007 the Miamisburg School Board announced its plans to expand the high school once again in the form of a 45,000 square foot addition(s) and an extremely-extensive renovation of the existing facility. The addition is set to include another gymnasium, 15-20 classrooms, a new "cafetorium", and possibly a new media center. This could possibly open as soon as the 2010-2011 school year.
The Miamisburg community said YES to the $78.5 million bond issue on March 4, 2008. The issue will raise about $23 million for the MHS addition/renovation project and $31 million for a new middle school to serve 1500 students in grades 6-8. The bond issue also include $11 million for a seventh elementary school for 550 students, $11 million for an addition/renovation project combining historic Kinder Elementary School and Neff Elementary, and $4 million for security enhancements to all other buildings in the district. Construction should be complete in 2010 for the new elementary school, 2011 for the high school additions and new middle school and 2012 for the Kinder/Neff renovation and addition.
