[edit] Metro Sports History

  • Metro Sports first aired on December 12th, 1996.
  • On February 9th 2004, Metro Sports and KCTV5 made television history, as KCTV5 outsourced its local nightly news sports segment to Metro Sports. Instead of originating from the KCTV studios in Fairway, KS, the sports segment is fed to the station via a fiber-optic cable from Time Warner’s Metro Sports studio, near Swope Park. Metro Sports produces all of KCTV’s sports programming, including Kansas City Chiefs pre-game and post-game shows, sports specials and live coverage of breaking sports news. The Metro Sports Report airs as KCTV's sports segment at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and at 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Metro Sports is known for its extensive high school coverage. It features the "High School Game of the Week" and an hour-long "High School Roundup", both on a weekly basis, dedicated to High School sports. The "High School Game of the Week" has previously featured NBA players Wayne Simien, Kareem Rush and Tyronn Lue. It has also featured NFL players Darren Sproles, Ladell Betts, Justin Gage, and Brandon Lloyd.
  • On September 11th, 2001, Metro Sports halted operations and closed the station for the day. The company contacted other Kansas City TV stations to offer their equipment, employees, and services in helping cover the events of the day.
  • Metro Sports has won 20 Mid-American Emmy awards in a 6-year period from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. (2006).
  • In the fall of 2006, Metro Sports published its first book, "More Than The Score: Kansas City Sports Memories", written by Matt Fulks, that chronicles the sports history of Kansas City.
  • In January 2007, Metro Sports started Metro Sports Youth, which promotes youth sports in Kansas City.
  • In fall of 2007 droves of viewers were let down as Metro Sports hyped the KU vs. MU basketball was gonna be replayed on Metro Sports. Game was hyped extensively, but Metro Sports, in what might be the biggest blunder in televison programming, forgot to get clearance from ESPNU for broadcast rights.
