Merkhav Mugan

Merkhav Mugan (Hebrew writing: מרחב מוגן) is defined by the Israeli law as an area in a building that is strengthened relatively to the building's other parts. As part of the lessons of the events of the Gulf War regarding to the efficiency of shelters, a law that require that there will be Merkhav Mugan in every new building that is used by people was legislated. The Merkhavim Muganim filling the places of the shelters. In a building that contains Merkhavim Muganim there is no requirement to build a shelter.

The purpose of the Merkhavim Muganim is to provide protection from air raids that the time of warning from them is too short too allow access to a shelter. The Merkhav Mugan supposed to provide to those who are in it protection from attacks with bombs of high explosive, and from attacks with chemical weapon. In the Merkhavim Muganim there is a possibility to install air-filters in a case that the required staying is long or when it talked-about an attack with biological, chemical or radio-active means. The detailed definitions and the instructions to building of Merkhavim Muganim are in the regulations of civil defending (specifications for building of shelters), התשנ"ד-1994.

There are number of sub-definition to Merkhavim Muganim accordingly to their location:

Merkhav Mugan Dirati (מרחב מוגן דירתי or ממ"ד) - installed in residential apartments.
Merkhav Mugan Komati (מרחב מוגן קומתי or ממ"ק) - common floorial space in apartment buildings in which there is no Merkhav Mugan Dirati in every apartment and in other multi-story buildings (mostly offices and industry).
Merkhav Mugan Mosadi (מרחב מוגן מוסדי or ממ"מ) - installed in every public structure.
