The Mercury Cyclone was produced from 1964 to 1972, beginning as an option for the 1964 Mercury Comet, and continuing as a Mercury Comet Cyclone for the next three years. From 1968, the name Cyclone was applied to the Mercury Montego.

1966 Comet Cylone GT - 390 V8 335 hp Last AFX car manufactured by Ford Motor Company. Fiberglas hood. Chrome drees-up kit on top end of power plant. Indianapolis pace car. Mercury Cyclone 9" rear end. Around 13,000 produced while its sister car, the Ford Fairlane saw 45,000 produced. The 1965 / 1966 Cyclone GT's still hold several NHRA records. Records by the factory team cars set in that time period are still un-matched as of today.

The 1968 Montego shared it's body with the Mercury Comet, but the Montego
had curb moldings, cigar lighter, and a glove box lock.

CYCLONE: The Cyclones had a mid tire level body tape stripe. The GT's had
an upper level body stripe, buckets, wide whitewall tires, special wheel
covers, all vinyl interior, and the special handling package. The Cyclone
and Cyclone GT Prduction numbers are mixed together. (The base Cyclones got the
smaller engines standard, while the GTs got the 390 standard. Note: can someone
verify this?) While the 427 was available, none were built per www.martiauto.com.

1969 MERCURY CYCLONE, MONTEGO, AND COMET (NOTE: Since Cyclone is tied so close to Montego, Comet it is included as reference) The 1969 Montego was basically unchanged from 1968 with the exception of a slight modification in the grille where the center of the grille protruded slightly. Also, the L-M emblem was now centered in the grille. COMET: The Comet now had Teakwood appliques on the instrument panel and the upholstery was now cloth and vinyl as standard. The base engine was the 250 Inline 6. 1970 MERCURY MONTEGO AND CYCLONE
(NOTE: In 1970 the Cyclone and Montego were on
the same platform, so the Montego information is
included as reference).
The 1970 Montego went through a major design
change. The produding front hood now had a
"coffin" look about it and all the sheetmetal
was redesigned, as well as the interior. The
exterior shared the basic lines of the Torino
while the interior was almost exactly the
same as the Torino's with minor trim
differences.
MONTEGO: The Comet was dropped and the Montego
became the base mid-sized car. Base engine was
a 250ci, inline 6.

CYCLONE: The apparent differences in the Cyclone was the center section of
the grille was a chrome square divided into four pieces with a chrome circle
in the center. Rectangular running lights were also included in the grille
along with the turn signal/marker lights in the bumper. The Competition

1971 Mercury Montego and Cyclone (NOTE: The Montego info is provided as a reference as it closely related to the Cyclone) The 1971 Mercury Montego was basically a carryover from 1970 with the exception of the grille being toned down a bit in a criss-cross pattern. Wheel lip and window moldings were now standard on base models. In the drivetrain department, the compression ratios dropped quite a bit and the selection of engines decreased. 1971 MERCURY MONTEGO MONTEGO: Base engine was still the 250ci Inline 6. The rear spoiler was now painted black, instead of body color. The base engine was now the 351 4V, but many were equipped with the optional 429CJ or 429CJ ram air. A Cyclone Spoiler was not available with the 429 Thunder Jet, 429 Policew Interceptor, nor the 429 Boss. The center "gunsight" on the grille was larger than the previous year, but did not have an emblem like the GT. Bumper mounted turn signal lenses were now amber, chrome trim was deleted from the rear edge of the hood, and the side view sport mirrors were located differently. The interior now sported molded one-piece door panels, but the rear side panels were still embossed vinyl over cardboard. NOTE: A 1972 Cyclone was never made; only a Montego GT. However, there was a "Cyclone"
performance package mentioned. It included the 351 Cobra Jet, Competition Handling Package,
Performance Instrumentation Group, and non-functional hood scoops. Production figures are unknown.
1972 Mercury Montego
The 1972 Montego was a completely new body over the 1971. The Interior went
through a total redesign and the exterior sheet metal was totally different.
Most notable in the 1972 was the huge rear bumper that included long strip
taillights. The wheelbase for 4 doors was 118", overall length was 213",
for 2 doors, wheelbase was 114", overall was 209", SW's were 118" wheelbase
with overall 216". These are the same for 1973. Here are the models
