[edit] History
The impetus for the formation of the Medway School of Pharmacy came from the local community, which recognised the shortage of qualified pharmacists in all branches of the pharmacy profession in Kent. As a result of work by both universities, supported by a professional liaison group, the school received approval from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain to take the first cohort of students onto the pharmacy degree (MPharm) in September 2004.
[edit] Medway Campus
This splendid Edwardian redbrick and ivy-clad campus – dating from 1903 – has benefited from £20 million capital investment since 1996. Extensive new laboratories and research facilities were opened in 2003 and the university has linked with other educational establishments to develop the campus as a major higher education centre in the Medway region. [2]
The Multiversity campus at Medway is beginning to regenerate the whole of North Kent. Currently the biggest higher education initiative in the UK, this is a unique partnership between the University of Greenwich, University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University and Mid-Kent College. It is estimated that in five years time the campus will hold up to 6500 students where each institution will offer its own range of courses, both full-and part-time. [2]
Students are able to draw on state of the art facilities as well as enjoy the benefits of a shared student union with many sporting activities.
The campus is also opening up opportunities for people without traditional qualifications. This is bringing a good balance of mature and younger students all of whom benefit from each other’s life experiences.[2]

[edit] Accommodation
As the Medway School of Pharmacy is a joint collaboration between the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent, our students are able to have access to accommodation offered by both Universities.
[edit] University of Greenwich Accommodation
Within the grounds of the Medway campus at Chatham Maritime, the university has use of Wolfe and Merlin Houses, a recently constructed hall of residence offering 204 single study/bedrooms - all with en-suite toilet/shower facilities - in shared, self-catering flats. Every room is wired for direct access to the university’s network for Internet and e-mail services.[3]
The campus is growing quickly, with new facilities being added all the time and the student numbers are also rising. Bus services are available to the local towns and the university also provides a dedicated bus link between Medway and the Avery Hill campus in Eltham South East London.[3]

[edit] University of Kent Accommodation
Peak House is a Grade II listed building, now converted into student flats, and retaining some period features. It is located close to Chatham High Street and shops, buses, the railway station and other local amenities.
The one, two and three bedroom flats are of a high quality, with wireless internet access. Each flat has a shared bathroom and lounge/kitchen/diner area.
Rent includes unlimited internet access, heating, lighting and water. Peak House has its own communal laundry room, with a coin-operated washing machine and dryer. There is on-street parking is available in the surrounding area, for which you need a parking permit (available from the local Medway Council and currently costing £15 per year).[4]
[edit] Additional Kent Accommodation
In addition to Peak House, the University head-leases several good quality private sector houses in the Gillingham, Chatham, and Rochester areas. Some houses are within walking distance of the Campus, others are located further away but are either on bus routes or easily accessed by students with transport.[4]

[edit] Facilities & Investment
A £50m building programme under way at the campus has already made significant improvements to social and academic facilities. A key development has been the conversion of the former Grade II listed Drill Hall, on the lower level of the site, into a modern learning resource centre. The library, opened in 2005, houses more than 157,000 books and pamphlets and 2.7 miles of shelves. State-of-the-art computer equipment and the latest software are available on an open access basis, so you can log in and connect to the resources you need.[5]
The Pilkington Building, next to the Drill Hall, is the latest building to be refurbished and equipped as a 21st-century student centre and teaching space. Pilkington also offers a light and airy seating area with a bistro-style café.[5]
On campus there is also the campus pub, Coopers, which has been recently refurbished. This has a low-ceiling and is full of nooks and crannies, creating a traditional British pub feel. An all-new club on campus, Purple opens until 2am and offers school disco, sports nights and other themed events. There is also a gym and sports hall offers cardio-vascular and weights rooms, and facilities for football and volleyball. You can also take classes in aerobics or self defence. The hall also offers other activities, including badminton, netball and table tennis.[5]
[edit] Student Societies
There are a range of societies on the Medway campus including a number of thriving sports clubs. A mixed hockey team has a healthy rivalry with its opposite number at the Avery Hill campus, and two football teams compete in the Southern England Student Sports Association League. The campus has a respectable history in cricket, with success in the British Universities’ Sports Association League in previous years. [6]
There are also a number of alternatives. The Nutrition Society has developed out of Medway’s science programmes, while religious societies offer on campus support. Other societies include RAG, Law, and the Future Aspirations Group. Further ideas for societies would be warmly welcomed.[6]
The students of the Medway School of Pharmacy have also established their own student association, the Medway Pharmacy Students' Association (MPSA).
[edit] Departments
Within the Medway School of Pharmacy there are three academic staff subject groupings.
[edit] Chemistry and Drug Delivery
The Chemistry and Drug Delivery group is based in newly refurbished laboratories with dedicated state-of-the art drug delivery, nanotechnology, spectroscopy, and chromatography and organic synthesis facilities. Our group brings together researchers in medicinal chemistry and drug design, structural biology, nanotechnology and polymer science, drug delivery and pharmaceutics encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to research.
[edit] Biological Sciences
The Biological Sciences group is housed in newly refurbished laboratories with dedicated state-of-the-art molecular biological, tissue culture, electrophysiological and microscopy facilities.
[edit] Clinical and Professional Practice
The Clinical and Professional Practice group currently comprises seven full time and four part time members of academic staff; five teacher practitioners and four clinical technicians. Our research is divided into five broad themes of addiction, long term conditions, child health, sexual health and professionalism of pharmacy.
[edit] Research
The Medway School of pharmacy has over twenty academic research staff arranged in three primary research groups:
- Chemistry and Drug Delivery
- Biological Sciences
- Clinical and Professional Practice
The School has a five year plan (2005/06 to 2009/10) for developing capacity and infrastructure to establish a program of high quality international research. To achieve this, the School has made a commitment to investing £6 million over this period with £3.8 million in building refurbishment and start up costs, £1 million in research scholarships (for 40 PhD students over the next 4 years) and £1.2 million in research consumables.
