The Medical University of Vienna (German: Medizinische Universität Wien, short: MUW) , formerly the faculty of medicine of the University of Vienna, became an independent university on January 1, 2004. The independence of medical schools from the structure of "general" universities was part of a larger reform of the Austrian university system enacted by the Schüssel government in 2003.
