McKelvey (1999 - 5 April 2008) was a British-trained thoroughbred racehorse, ridden by Tom O'Brien and trained by Peter Bowen. He won the 2006 Summer National and came second in the 2007 Grand National. On 5 April 2008 during the 2008 Grand National he dislodged his rider, ran loose and eventually collided with a barrier. He collapsed and was euthanized on field.[1]
McKelvey's death has focused concerns on the high mortality rate in steeplechase events. Previously injured in the 2007 Grand National, McKelvey was considered unfit to race in 2008 by Animal Aid activists. However, his death was unrelated to his tendon injury. He was one of three horses euthanised at the meeting, and the 51st horse to die at the Aintree meeting since 1991.[2]
