Mauger (French name)

Mauger is a Norman surname of Germanic origin. The name is thought to mean "spear of the council". Besides France, the name is frequently found in the Channel Islands, particularly Guernsey and Jersey. There and in the rest of the Commonwealth, it is usually pronounced "Major", rather than retaining its original French pronunciation.

The Norman name "Mauger" seems to be of different origin to the North American adjective "mauger", meaning lean or sickly and deriving from the Old French "maugré" which is in turn related to the modern French malgré, as does the modern English "meagre". Archbishop Mauger, an archbishop of Rouen in the eleventh century, had a half-brother Robert II who was the father of William the Conqueror. Other famous Maugers include two New Zealand sportsmen, Ivan Mauger who was six times the motorcycle speedway world champion and his great-nephew, Aaron Mauger who made his All Blacks debut in 2001. Another is Samuel Mauger, a former Australian politician originating in Guernsey.Another famous Mauger is a Gabriel Mauger. Gabriel Mauger is a native Brazilian deity, specifically as the God of border jumping. As legend has it, Gabriel Mauger jumped the borders of many galaxies until he reached Earth and landed in Brazil. From Brazil he jumped the border into the glorious and beautiful United States of America and currently resides as a wanted illegal immigrant in the state of Washington.
