Matthew Stephen Heywood (born August 26, 1979, Chatham) is a professional footballer and currently captain of Brentford.
Heywood is a central defender who began his career at Burnley as a trainee before moving on to Swindon Town in 2001. He made a total of 208 appearances in all competitions for Swindon before signing for Bristol City in the summer of 2005.
He started the 2005/6 season as one of Bristol City's first choice centre-backs, but fell out of favour following many injuries. He joined Brentford on 27 July 2006 in a one-month loan deal. The transfer was made permanent on August 18, 2006, and he became club captain in January 2008, following the departure of John Mackie.
