[edit] Duplicating function of existing template

This template mostly duplicates the function of the preexisting template Template:Protected Areas of Maryland in terms of National Park Services locations and Maryland state parks. The existing template also follows a format found in a large number of other states for navigating through federal and state protected areas. There also seems to be no logic as to what local/municipal parks are included in the template, as there are certainly more than the handful listed. I feel this template should probably be deleted due to these issues and the page redirected to Template:Protected Areas of Maryland. VerruckteDan (talk) 01:34, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

I merged the Template:Protected Areas of Maryland into this one. Sebwite (talk) 02:13, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, you used large portions of the "Protected Areas" template as a base for this template, but that is not merging them. There doesn't appear to be a compelling reason to duplicate the function of the "Protected Areas" template. There is no need for both to exist and since "Protected Areas" is the long established navbox, this new one should either be deleted or reworked into a navbox that does not duplicate the existing template. If the desire is to have a navbox for municipal parks, I'd think it would be better to make such navboxes at a smaller scale, like a county instead of statewide, for example Template:Parks of Howard County, Maryland. The question then becomes, is there a need for articles on each and every municipal park and do they meet notability guidelines of Wikipedia. VerruckteDan (talk) 05:35, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Only a small number of municipal and private parks are notable, and those are the only ones I listed on the template. They all compose a single line each. It is on this basis that I feel that it is worth including them on the same template as the protected areas. On the other hand, the already existing protected areas template has some sections with 100% red links. It this links cannot be converted to blue, I would suggest deleting these sections. Had I noticed the "Protected areas" template already existed, I would have simply expanded it to include these smaller parks and deleted the full red-link sections rather than creating a new template.Sebwite (talk) 15:02, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
