Talk:Marriage websites

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Except for www.jainadarsh.com all other matrimonial sites are commercial sites. However jainadarsh.com is a totally free site, launched as a social service project of Vyasan Mukta Pariwar, Hyderabad. It does not restrict itself to the Jain community alone but has introduced the concept of 'Jains by habits'. Thus people who are not Jains by religion or birth but by habits find a place and people who may be jains by birth but not by habits are kept away. In addition the website has a page to explain the essence of Jainism, not as a religion but as a essential way of life. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.169.135.81 (talk) 08:44, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Contents

[edit] Talk page content erroneously placed in article

Note: This item seems to be restricted to only two sites based in India catering to a Hindu clientele. It contains no references to sites based in other parts of the world, nor does it refer to the sites' pre-internet predecessors, mail-order bridal agencies.

I've move that note from the article to here. Uncle G

[edit] References

The references section seems to be hidden from editing view? I added some information from an Economist article, added the article to references, but it's formatted in a different way than the other references. Since I can't see them, I'm not sure how to proceed with editing them. gloria 20:45, 7 September 2006 (UTC) gloriamarie

[edit] adding link

request to add shaadiya.com - it is a marriage website -that's the biggest reason to add

Why it mentions only Ukraine? There's a Russian matchmaking site www.be2.ru!

The point of the page isn't to list specific service providers - it's to cover the concept of marriage websites. Specific service providers generally make for inappropriate external links an are rarely reliable sources for encyclopedic assertions. -- SiobhanHansa 14:35, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

But why then adding any at all? Have you seen the site before you put the link? I don't think it's the one which represents the marriage websites concept...—Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.57.59.154 (talk • contribs)

We aren't mentioning any specific sites - at least, not intentionally. Sometimes they slip in for a while but I take them out when I see them. If you spot one please point it out. -- SiobhanHansa 01:52, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Neutrality tag

The India section was tagged as not being neutral - but there is no discussion on this page pointing out what specifically is considered POV. Does anyone have current concerns about it? -- SiobhanHansa 01:57, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

A lot of the article makes unbased claims only on personal opinion and experiences. For example:

"Typically, matrimonial sites are used by people who prefer arranged marriage over love marriage."

Who says that this is true? Are there studies supporting such a claim? There is an argument that the dating sites that cater to the United States population are matrimonial sites to some, as some people on ther are looking to eventually get married. They are on those sites because they want to find someone, not necessarily because they "prefer an arranged marriage over a love marriage." I do agree that some in India join these sites because they prefer arranged marriages, but can you say that's the case for everyone?
The article is full of statements like these. I had been working on other projects which is why I didnt address them because this requires extensive rewording and work to sound more neutral and to an encyclopedic standard. Hope that helps. Arnabdas 15:24, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks - that gives us something concrete to focus on. -- SiobhanHansa 20:06, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
