[edit] Literal meaning
We need a literal translation of the term--what the words mean.—iFaqeer (Talk to me!) 01:45, Mar 11, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Khomeini
I was under the impression (incidentally taught by Rudi Matthee who should know something about Iran) that Khomeini was never a marja' at-taqlid, and that the last one (in Iran) had died in 1964 or around there... he was a Grand Ayatollah... and Khameini and Ayatollah... but not marja' at-taqlid. [edit] Sentence needs clarrifying.
"This marja'yiat of an Ayatollah happens when the followers of one of the Ayatollahs refer to him in many situations and ask him to publish his Juristic book in which he answers the vast majority of daily Muslim affairs."
Does this mean that when ANY follower of an Ayatollah asks him to publish a book (and he does so) he becomes a Grand Ayatollah? This means I could just go up to an Ayatollah, tell him to publish a book, and if he does, he is automatically a Grand Ayatollah? Diemunkiesdie 23:23, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- Traditionally only the most famous Ayatollahs of the given time published Resalah. But today, after new freedoms of press in Iraq, any given Ayatollah can publish the book, hence the confusion about the title. Furthermore, some top Ayatollahs may refuse to publish the book, making the title even more obscure. This is why the followers issue was noted on the list of marjas page.--Gerash77 00:12, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
