Maryland Route 231 is a two-lane state highway in Maryland connecting Calvert County, Maryland and Charles County, Maryland.

Route 231 starts in Prince Frederick, Maryland as Church Street and proceeds west. Upon intersecting with Maryland Route 2 and Maryland Route 4. Route 231's designation becomes Hallowing Point Road. After leaving Prince Frederick, Route 231 passes through the community of Barstow and past the Calvert County Fairgrounds. It then proceeds westward for approximately 3 more miles to the Patuxent River.

Route 231 crosses the Patuxent River by way of a half-mile long drawbridge commonly referred to as the Benedict Bridge. Route 231 enters Charles County by the small town of Benedict, Maryland. After Benedict, Route 231 continues westward for approximately 8 miles until reaching Hughesville, Maryland.

Until 2007, the intersection of Route 231 and Maryland Route 5 in Hughesville was very congested, as it dealt with converging traffic from all three counties in the Southern Maryland region. However, in 2007 a bypass to the east side of Hughesville was opened, and a new overpass-style interchange was completed connecting Route 231 with Route 5, thus significantly improving traffic flow in the area.

After the Hughesville bypass, Route 231 meets Old Route 5 in Hughesville's central business district. Route 231 continues west for several more miles under the designation of Burnt Shop Road, until finally ending at the intersection of Oliver Shop Road.
