Mary Verner

Mary Verner (born August 13, 1956) is an American politician, a member of the Democratic Party, and Mayor of the City of Spokane, Washington.

Originally from Fitzgerald, Georgia, Verner received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Davidson College, and earned her Masters of Arts degree in environmental management from Yale University. She later earned a law degree from Gonzaga University. She is the third female mayor of Spokane, after Vickie McNeill and Sheri S. Barnard, who was mayor from 1990-1994.

Verner served on the City Council for four years before becoming mayor. Originally an appointment to the council, Verner ran for Mayor against the man she took over for, Dennis Hession. Verner won with 53% of the vote, becoming Spokane's 43rd mayor on November 27th 2007 (the city's fifth mayor in the past eight years.)
