Born in Trondheim, Norway, he is noted for being the composer of the first Norwegian opera, Fredkulla.
Udbye's first attempt to present Fredkulla to the Norwegian public was thwarted in 1857, when the Oslo theatre where it was scheduled to be performed burned to the ground. The opera was performed in 1997 as part of Trondheim's 1,000 year anniversary celebration.
