Marske-by-the-Sea is a large village in East Cleveland, in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. It is located on the coast, between the seaside resorts of Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea. It is in the civil parish of Saltburn, Marske and New Marske and comprises the wards of Longbeck (which is also shared with New Marske) and St Germains.[2]

Marske is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village contains St Germain's Church, which was consecrated by bishop Ægelric between 1042 and 1056.[3]
Marske was amerced 20 marks for its part in the pillaging of a Norwegian vessel in 1180.[3]
Marske has two imposing houses. Marske Hall, now a Cheshire Home, was built around 1625 and was formerly the home of the the Zetland family.[4] Cliff House, which stands on the cliff tops overlooking the beach, was built in the 19th century as a holiday residence for the Pease family, who were prominent in the north-east business community at the time and principal shareholders in the Stockton to Darlington Railway.[citation needed] The railway was extended to Redcar in the 1840s and to Marske and Saltburn in the 1860s.
The village has a museum, Winkies Castle, which is not a castle but an old cruck house formerly owned by the late cobbler, Jack Anderson. It contains over 6,000 artefacts. The castle has a website and is open to visitors.[5]
Marske was the home to Charlotte Hughes, the longest-lived person ever documented in the United Kingdom.
Charles Dickens visited the town to view Marske Hall's unusual turrets [6] and to see the graves of Captain Cook's parents. An early 20th century memorial, 20-30 yards west of St Germain's tower, marks the approximate location.[7]
The Royal Flying Corps had a landing strip and schools in Marske.[8][9] The Bristol M1C Monoplane, The Red Devil, was first flown from this RFC base.[10] The RAF later administered a base. The site of the aerodrome became an ICI depot and later a housing estate called Barnes Wallis Way.
Marske was in national news in 2007 following the conviction of local driving instructor Stephen Cooney for, amongst other crimes, secreting a carrot in his pants.[11][12] Greater tragedy was to hit the village at New Year in 2008 following the death of Ron Sharples on Inglewood Avenue, who died from head injuries following a severe assault.[13][14] Two youths have been charged.[15]

The majority of the residents of Marske do not work within the village, but work in nearby industry or in Middlesbrough or Redcar. Marske has a decent range of local shops and a mixture of light industries on the Longbeck Industrial Estate. It is served by Longbeck and Marske railway stations, which connect to Darlington mainline station.

Marske-by-the-Sea has three primary schools: Errington Primary School, Westgarth Primary School, and St Bede's R.C. Primary School; the secondary schools the village is mainly served by are Bydales School located within the village and Rye Hills School, Sacred Heart R.C. Comprehensive School, located in Redcar, and Huntcliff School, located in Saltburn.
The village has Methodist, Roman Catholic and Church of England churches. Also, the village's leisure centre houses a Baptist congregation.
Marske-by-the-Sea has five public houses. They are The Frigate, The Ship Inn (Bottom House), The Zetland (Top House), The Mermaid and The Clarendon (Middle House). Other licensed premises include Marske Cricket Club, the bowls/tennis/football club and the Marske Working Men's Club.
Marske-by-the-Sea also has a football club, Marske United F.C.
