[edit] History

A small public primary educational institution named Marrickville Public School was built on a block of land on Chapel Street in the suburb of Marrickville in 1865, which was offered by Thomas Chalder. By 1874, the infants department on this campus was created. Neighboring the school was Marrickville's old Council Chambers, it was bought by the Department of Education on 22 November 1878, and was converted to the teacher's residence and made part of the already existing campus.

By 1900, the teacher's residence (which originally was the old Council Chamber) was demolished, and a two storey brick building was constructed on that site and would become a girl's school. On 1 January 1945, this girl's department was turned into a secondary school for girls, called Marrickville Girl's Intermediate High School. In 1922, the old Marrickville Town Hall located on Illawarra Rd. was bought and established as a Boy's Junior Technical College.

The collection of the Chapel St. School which included: Marrickville Public School which comprised of a primary boys and girls division with separate buildings, the infant school, the newly established Marrickville Girl's Intermediate High School and the Boy's Junior Technical College located off campus, was unofficially known as Marrickville Superior Public School.

In 1949, the boys of Marrickville Boys Junior Technical College were transferred to Dulwich Hill Junior Technical College and Tempe Boys Intermediate High School, to provide much needed accommodation for the girls of the infant, primary and secondary departments. It has been recognised for some time now that Marrickville Girl's Intermediate High School should become an independent institution even though they are still sharing the same campus. In 1954, it was turned into Marrickville Girl's Junior High School. On 28 April 1969, the proposal to build a new secondary school on Sydenham Rd. was favoured.

When the new Marrickville High School is opened, the students of Marrickville Girl's Junior High School would be transferred to the new school, leaving the Chapel St. school all for the primary and infant departments. Marrickville Girl's Junior High School on their new campus on Sydenham Rd. officially opened on Friday, 7 October 1977 by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Arthur Roden Cutler.

The school became coeducational so as to cater for more students. It officially opened in its new accommodation on Friday 7 December 1979, and officially was recognised as Marrickville High School. By 1984, Marrickville High became completely co-educational.
