[edit] Mission Statement

Marist High School is a Catholic, college preparatory, coeducational school, inspired and motivated by the charism of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, the Founder of the Marist Brothers.

Marist High School is committed to excellence in preparing young men and women of diverse backgrounds for further education. Its commitment to excellence is enhanced by a qualified, caring faculty who seek to share faith, culture, and life experience while exemplifying Gospel values.

Marist High School provides a safe, affordable, family atmosphere in which each student is provided opportunities to develop his or her potential in the life-long pursuit of truth, excellence, and happiness.

[edit] History

Marist first opened its doors in September, 1954. Under the leadership of Brother Leo Sylvius, the school's first principal, Marist High School quickly established a reputation for excellence. Strong support from parents and the wider community made it imperative to plan a new and larger school. In 1962 the present campus was acquired, and on April 23, 1964, ground was broken for a new building which would tie together existing buildings on the campus.

The result was a modern structure with twenty-four classrooms, lecture rooms and laboratories for physics, chemistry, biology and earth science, an art studio, a computer center, and a fully equipped weight room. An extensive library with a complete audio-visual department, a guidance complex with a career resource center, together with a large gymnasium-auditorium complex and a spacious cafeteria complete the school building. In 1977, additional land was acquired for expanding the school's athletic facilities. In 1995, an athletic field was built in back of the school.

In 1986, due to changing demographics, Marist decided to open its doors to young women and became a co-educational high school. Marist prides itself on its multicultural diversity. Students from throughout Hudson and Essex counties and the surrounding metropolitan area attend the school. While Marist is established primarily for Catholic students, the school does welcome and provide for the admission of students of other religious traditions. Marist strives to maintain an atmosphere of acceptance and hospitality for all, to create a family of care and concern, and to nurture a community that fosters acceptance, generosity, and mutual respect, all while creating an atmosphere conducive for learning.

For over fifty years, Marist High School has fostered three distinct traditions: the pursuit of academic excellence, the heritage of Catholic education, and the unique spirit and heritage of the Marist Brothers. Marist assists students in forming their consciences by emphasizing the dignity of the individual and Christ's call to serve others. The faculty of Marist is committed to the charism of the founder, Saint Marcellin Champagnat: "To make Jesus known and loved through the Christian education of youth." Marist's hope is that each of its graduates is committed to life-long learning.
