Marin Karmitz (born October 7, 1938 in Bucharest, Romania) is a Romanian born, French film exhibitor, film distributor, producer, executive producer and filmmaker. At the age of nine, his Jewish family fled Romania for France. Karmitz attended film school at France's IDHEC and worked as a director of photography after graduating. He founded the production company and movie theater chain MK2, which has specialized in creating, distributing, and screening independent or "auteurist" cinema, and especially short films.
He was a notable opponent of efforts to add coloration to classic black-and-white films, claiming that art works did not need post-facto "improvement."
In 2004, Karmitz refused to distribute The Passion of The Christ in France; the distribution was eventually taken over by Tarak Ben Ammar.
In 2005, he turned over leadership of the MK2 company and its theaters to his son, Nathanaël.
