Margaret Augusta Eliot was a professor of oboe at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She taught George Martin to play oboe. She was a great granddaughter of Edward Granville Eliot, 3rd Earl of St Germans (1798-1877).
Margaret Eliot was born on February 26, 1914 at Pancras, London to Edward Granville Eliot, a younger brother of Montague Eliot, 8th Earl of St Germans, and Edward's wife Clare Louise nee Phelips. On July 27, 1943 [2], she married Dr Richard Asher (1912-1969) and had three children:
- Peter Asher - b. 1944, who was one half of the pop duo Peter & Gordon
- Jane Asher - b. 1946, the film and TV actress, novelist
- Clare Asher - b. 1948, the radio actress
During the 1960s, Paul McCartney lodged with the Asher family.
