María Viramontes

María Viramontes is the Democratic Vice Mayor[1] of the city of Richmond, California. She is both the first Latino person and woman to achieve reach this position. She was appointed by the city council. She was reelected in the November 2006 elections and will retain her designation as vice mayor.
She has been a Richmond resident for more than 30 years and said that her campaign was "all about Richmond" because "[her] life has been all about Richmond" ([1]).
Her campaign focused on the relationship between the city and its citizens. She supports community policing and "neighborhood service teams" which would act as liaisons between the government and neighborhoods; their purpose she claims is to provide accountability.
She previously served as the CEO of Children's Foundation.
In 2003, along with several councilmembers she fought for the opening of health care center for immigrants in the city's predominantly Latino district. This was made possible by a $450,000 grant and is a satellite facility to an existing clinic in neighboring San Pablo where residents had to go before.[2]
