The Federal Legislative Election 1955 which was held on 27 July 1955 is the only General Election in Federation of Malaya (now Malaysia) before her independence on 31 August 1957. In this election, the Parti Perikatan which consisted of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) and Malayan Indian Congress (MIC) won 81% of the total votes, with 51 out of 52 seats which was contested. Pan-Malayan Islamic Party (PMIP) won their only seat which was Krian, Perak, and the Member of Parliament was nicknamed "Mr. Opposition".
PMIP was formed just for this election. Before that, PMIP was an organisation called "Pan-Malayan Islamic Association" (Malay: Persatuan Islam Se-Malaysia) and played its political role as a part of UMNO. PMIP gained its power and support by putting up their aim of making Islam as the base of the Malay society in the north of Malay Peninsula who were facing the lowest economical growth in Malaya.
This is also the first election MIC contested. MIC joined the Parti Perikatan in 1954, while MCA had teamed up with UMNO in the Kuala Lumpur City Election in 1952.
