Makoto Fujimura

Makoto Fujimura (born in 1960 in Boston, USA), a 21st Century Contemporary Artist, studied extensively in the U.S. during the 1980s and 90’s, graduating with a B.A. from Bucknell University. He later studied in a traditional Japanese painting doctorate program for several years at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. His lengthy arts education bore fruit with a fusion between fine art and abstract expressionism together with the traditional Japanese art of Nihonga.
The International Arts Movement was founded by Fujimura and co-hosted a major conference, "The Return of Beauty", in New York City in 2002. His studio in the USA was close to Ground Zero and he could not help be deeply affected by the events of 9.11 and his sense of community and hope of restoration is demonstrated at www.tribecatemporary.com.
His work is represented at the Dillon Gallery in New York City, and the Sen Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. The public can view collections at The Saint Louis Museum, in Tokyo and the CNN building in Hong Kong. He was appointed to the National Council on the Arts, a Presidential appointment, in 2003.
His work includes “The Splendor of the Medium”, a collection of paintings using stone-ground minerals including azurite, malachite and cinnabar. He is also an author of several books including "River Grace" (Poiema Press, 2008), and "Refractions: A Journey of Faith, Art and Culture" (Deliberate Press, 2009)
