Mahakali Zone

Mahakali is one of the fourteen zones of Nepal, it is the most western part of Nepal and has an area of 6205 sqkm. It stretches along Nepal's far western border with India, marked by the Mahakali River. In the very northern section of the border, there has been a long lingering boundary dispute with India (Kalapani area).

Mahakali's headquarter is in Amaragadhi (Dadeldhura district). This zone covers Himalayan range (including Api pic) in the North, Hill valleys, Valley of Inner Tarai (Patan in Baitadi district) in the center and the outer Tarai in the South. The name of this zone is derived from the Mahakali river which is bordering the river Sugauli after the Sugauli Treaty signed with the British East India Company . Mahakali also means Goddess in the Hindu religion, and also called Kali in Nepali Language. This zone has border with China in the North, India in the south and East and Seti Zone in the West.

[edit] Sigauli Treaty

The Sugauli Treaty (also spelled Segowlee) was signed on December 2, 1815 and ratified on March 4, 1816, between the British East India Company and The Kingdom of Nepal, ending the second British invasion of the Himalayan kingdom during the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816). The Sugauli Treaty was superseded in December 1923 by a "Treaty of Perpetual Peace and Friendship," which upgraded the British resident to an envoy. A separate Friendship Treaty was signed between Nepal and India (India became an independent Nation in 1947) in 1950 which restored fresh relations between the two independent sovereign countries.

Districts of Mahakali

Mahakali Zone is divided into four (4) districts:

Baitadi District with Baitadi as its headquarters, covers an area of 1,519 sqkm
Dadeldhura District with Dadeldhura as its headquarters, covers an area of 1,538 sqkm
Darchula District with Dadeldhura as its headquarters, covers an area of 1,538 sqkm
Kanchanpur District with Mahendranagar as its headquarters, covers an area of 1610 sqkm

The largest city in the Mahakali Zone is Mahendranagar, which is also the headquarter of Kanchanpur district. Other main towns of Mahakali Zone are Dashrathchand, Patan (Baitadi)and Darchula Bajar.

The Amargadhi, the distrcit headquarter, is named after General Amarshing Thapa (a famous Gorkha General) who defended Nepal in the Anglo Nepalalese war (1814-1816).

Mahakali hosts one of Nepal's former wildlife reserves, now the Suklaphanta National Park in Kanchanpur district (declared in 1973) in the Terai plains.It covers an area of 305 sqkm.It is the first National Park of Nepal to preserve a unique ecosystem. UNESCO included this site as a World Heritage site, in the year 1984. Only a part of the park is used for tourism
