Mad City is a 1997 drama and thriller film written by Tom Matthews and Eric Williams, directed by Costa Gavras, and starring John Travolta, Dustin Hoffman, Mia Kirshner, Alan Alda, Blythe Danner, Ted Levine, Raymond J. Barry, Jay Leno, and Larry King.

The film is about a man named Sam Baily (Travolta) who gets laid off from his job as a museum security guard and takes the museum hostage. A journalist (Hoffman) is in the museum at the time and breaks the story and a media circus erupts.

As of August 2007, the film had a score of 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 28 reviews; on Metacritic, the film had a score of 45 out of 100 (mixed or average reviews) based on 23 reviews. Film critic Roger Ebert said Mad City is inspired by the film Ace in the Hole, and gave the movie two stars, saying "the movie knows what it wants to do, but lacks the velocity for lift-off."[1]

In the United States, the film opened at #6 at the box office with an opening weekend gross of $4.6 million. The film eventually went on to gross $10.5 million.[2]
