Måsøy is a municipality in the county of Finnmark, Norway.

Måsøy was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The western part of Magerøya was transferred from Måsøy to Nordkapp January 1, 1984.

The municipality is to be found on the coast of Western Finnmark, comprising both parts of the mainland and smaller and bigger islands.

Most people live in Havøysund, but there are also small hamlets sprad around the islands and in the fjord areas, notably Snefjord, Kokelv, Ingøy, Rolvsøy and Måsøy. The Fruholmen lighthouse is the northernmost in Norway. Previously, Måsøy was the centre, hence the name of the municipality.

The hurtigruten calls at Havøysund daily, and there is a road connection, albeit often blocked by snow in the winter.

At Måsøy there is the tallest construction of Scandinavia, the 362 metre tall radio mast of longwave transmitter Ingoy.

[edit] The name

The first element is måse m 'seagull', the last element is øy f 'island'.

Until 1918 the name was written Maasø.

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1984). It shows a gaff (fishing).

[edit] Birdlife

Lying North West in the county, Måsøy has a selection of habitats and a varied birdlife. Once again, some of the counties largest seabird colonies can be found in the municipality with Hjelmsøy being one of the more interesting. White-tailed Eagle can be seen as well as both Arctic Skua and Great Skua.
