Luleå Airport (IATA: LLA, ICAO: ESPA) (Swedish: Luleå flygplats) is located about 10 km southeast of Luleå, Sweden, near the village of Kallax. It is the largest airport in northern Sweden (Norrland), and the 5th largest in Sweden. The airport had 902,168 passengers in 2005, most of whom flew to/from Stockholm.
[edit] History
The airport opened in 1984.
A connection to Murmansk, Russia was operated since the early 1990s by the Russian airline Arkhangelsk Airlines. With the route starting from Archangelsk, it was the only connection from these cities to Sweden. Their Russian machines were, however, banned in 2006 because of tighter noise and pollution restrictions imposed by the European Union. Nordkalottflyg (Barents AirLink) took over the connection in May 2006 but discontinued it in 2007.
Around the year 2000 the runway at Luleå Airport was extended and is now the longest in Sweden. The purpose of the extension was to attract heavy long-distance cargo flights, and the airport was planned to serve as a fuel stop for cargo flights from such cities as Tokyo and San Francisco. The distance e.g. Tokyo-Paris is shorter if routed through Luleå, compared to flying over China. So far Russian bureaucracy and fees for trans-Siberian flights have obstructed these plans, but a lower fee closer to standard values was accepted by Russian authorities in 2006, which has seen cargo traffic slowly increasing.[citation needed]
