Lizella, Georgia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lizella is a small unincorporated town located 11 miles southwest of Macon, Georgia. Lizella is located in Bibb County, Georgia. The population of Lizella is approximately 600 (according to 1990 census). Lizella is home to a single post office, several churches, a fire station, police station, shopping center, a public pool, a baseball field, a closed elementary school (W.B. Redding Elementary School) and a new elementary school (Sky View). U.S. Route 80 passes through Lizella.

Lizella was established around 1891, when the Macon and Birmingham Railroad Co. laid tracks to LaGrange amid a collection of farms west of Macon. The community it formed was dubbed Lizella by postmaster James E. Eubanks, according to the history book 'Remembering Lizella.' Eubanks drew the name from his two daughters, Lizzie and Ella.

In 1900, 64 people called the community home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

By 1990, there were 12,303 people in west Bibb. Ten years later, an additional 5,600 people had moved in.

[edit] Recreation

Lake Tobesofkee has three parks. Claystone and Sandy Beach Parks, located on Mosley Dixon Road near I-475 and Arrowhead Park, located on Columbus Road near U.S. 80. Each Park features covered picnic pavilions, clean and well maintained grounds and ample restroom facilities. Claystone and Sandy Beach Parks have large beaches with children's playgrounds. Sandy Beach also offers lighted tennis courts and a softball field for public use. The Beaches are topped with pure, white sand during the summer season. Each beach is staffed with lifeguards and Tobesofkee can boast of the largest and finest beaches outside the actual coast itself.

The government agency defines Lizella as everything west of Interstate 475 and south of Lake Wildwood. Residents and the U.S. Postal Service say it extends into Crawford County.
