[edit] Grid
There seems to be a rough grid for low-numbered routes:
- 2 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 22 24 26 30 32 38 40
- 4 (matched FL pre-1945) - earlier ran south on current 61 (US 411) from 2 (now 53) in Fairmount 1921, appears to have become 61 by 1929
- In 1923, the part along present-day US 411 is not even shown on the map; however, route 4 is shown proceeding west from 3 at Cartersville through Rome to the Alabama state line. This route appears to be modern SR 293 (east of Rome) and SR 20 (west of Rome). This is, notably, between 2 and 6. —Pedriana 03:34, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- 20 (maybe matched AL??? [1])
- If I'm reading the numbers correctly on this 1923 map, it looks like there was at that time a SR 20 running from Louisville to Waynesboro (south of Augusta). It's not quite in place, but not too far off (between 24 and 26, I think). This route is now SR 24, while SR 24 at that time ran along what looks like present-day US 1/SR 4 through Wrens to Augusta. This 1924 map appears to say the same. —Pedriana 03:34, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- 28 (matches SC and NC)
- 34 (maybe matched AL???)
- 36 (why?) - even out of place in 1932 on a different route
- 4 (matched FL pre-1945) - earlier ran south on current 61 (US 411) from 2 (now 53) in Fairmount 1921, appears to have become 61 by 1929
- 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 21 23 25
- 13 is west of 11, but used to be east as well 1986
- 19 is west of 15 (why?)
- 23 only sort of fits - it matched FL for a while after 1945 (but reached the border before 1945)
Differences on early maps of Florida (for these low numbers only):
- 3 on 35 (US 319) south of Thomasville, at least through 1947! (35 on present 3 south of Thomasville)
- 11 not on 1926 or 1927 (but another 1927 shows it at least north of Statenville, crossing the river there), went on 135 and 376 in 1932, ending at Lake Park - but 1930 shows it crossing the river just south of Howell and running on its current route through Statenville, all current in 1947, undated has it crossing at Statenville
- 15 on US 1 to Waycross, no 4 there - 4 only in 1930 and 1932 (no 15 at all in 1932, at least not at Blackshear)
- 23 not on 1932 map but on 1947 map, undated has it only north of Nahunta
- 27 rather than 25 on US 17 to Brunswick in 1926 - was 25 in 1927 so maybe a typo
- 40 seems to have run only east of Kingsland until between 1932 and 1947
Routes were numbered by 1920 - [2]
- Regarding 13 being west of 11, I believe 13 used to extend further up US 23, probably to at least US 441 if not the NC line, which would put a pretty sizeable portion of it east of 11 (and west of 15 and 17). —Pedriana 00:36, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah - that makes sense given 365 being alone. It was certainly 15 up near the state line though - see this 1921 map. This 1986 map takes 13 at least to Toccoa - presumably it ran to South Carolina on US 123. --SPUI (T - C) 01:03, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- And it did reach the border - [3] --SPUI (T - C) 01:15, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Page title
The title of this page seems a bit cumbersome. Perhaps it should be moved to List of Georgia State Routes State Routes in Georgia? Technically it would be more correct too (the current title implies all numbered routes, including U.S. Highways and Interstates). –Pedriana 03:05, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
- Altered the proposal – we can also make it like the articles for many of the other states, so that it contains more than just the list, but also general information on the State Route system, which otherwise currently has no suitable location. –Pedriana 23:30, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- There probably should be a simple list of U.S. Routes and Interstates below. GDOT uses state highway for roads maintained by the state - so how about state highways in Georgia, and then describe the three numbering systems used? --SPUI (T - C) 23:59, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
I';d prefer Georgia State Routes. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 16:50, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Routes - yesterday and today
This information is mostly from 1923, 1924, and 1939 maps, as well as a current GDOT map. It is a list of each route and whether it is the same as it was in the early 1920s. If not, the different times each existed are listed. --NE2 07:50, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] High numbers
These numbers (600+) are, as far as I know, not signed and generally seem to be used primarily for construction projects. –Pedriana (talk) 17:35, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Number | Count(y/ies) | Source | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
728 | Telfair, Wheeler | 2000-02 444 reports, 2005 county maps | Apparently this is a southern/eastern bypass (for US 280/SR 30) of McRae. 2005 county maps contradict; in Wheeler this is labeled as SR 728, but in Telfair it is shown as CR 270. |
746 | Floyd | 2000-02 444 reports, 2005 county map | Southern/western bypass of Rome, probably an extension of 1 Loop. (As a side note, why is it 1 Loop instead of 20 Loop? It connects to 20 at both ends, not 1, and this will still be true post-extension.) |
754 | Cobb | 2000-01 444 reports | Still appears on some maps, and I have heard somewhere (can't remember where) that this one has actually been signed. Former route of SR 5 prior to the construction of I-575. |
758 | Bibb | 2000-02 444 reports, 2005 county map | Extension of Eisenhower Parkway, which would serve as an eastern bypass of downtown Macon. Likely to carry US 80 when completed. |

827 (decommissioned) | Taylor | 2002 RMcN, 2005 GDOT county map | Southern bypass of Butler, likely part of the Fall Line Freeway. This number is, however, not shown in the 2002 444 report. The 2005 Taylor County map (SRs current as of 2006-03-30) shows this as SR 96, with the original parts of 96 through town that weren't also part of 137 apparently turned back to the county. |
