[edit] NS as a successor to Conrail?

Can anyone find a reliable source that states that Norfolk Southern Railway operates any service in the state of Connecticut? The route maps I have seen on the article and the NS web site imply that they have no operations east of New York State. I have not been able to find a source to verify the claim that NS operates freight service formerly done by Conrail in Connecticut (as is claimed in this list article). 67.86.73.252 (talk) 01:18, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Looking at the official NS system map, it would seem that you're right. I can't get the official CSX system map to load right now, but I'm guessing that it will show the former CR lines in Connecticut on that map. So, I'll update the list here accordingly. Slambo (Speak) 10:37, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the edit. The CSX map you cited has a distinct blue line indicating CSX service along the New Haven Line and the New Haven-Springfield Line (but not along the Shore Line Railway (Connecticut) or Shore Line East). I suspect that the splitup of Conrail into CSX and NS may have led someone to think NS might have operated in Connecticut in the post Conrail era. However, according to PRR history Conrail only operated (did not own) the New Haven line (and branches) under contract with the state of Connecticut for $100,000/year starting on January 1, 1971 (even with passenger fare and freight revenue added that seems like a surprisingly small amount of money for the time, that is allowing for inflation. It indicates just how desperate was the company that was in its death throes, having tried to cash in on the destruction of Penn Station in Manhattan in 1965). 67.86.73.252 (talk) 02:18, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
