[edit] Raccoons in mythology
- Tanuki in Japanese Mythology. "Tanuki" is often mistranslated "raccoon". They are really raccoon dogs (genus Nyctereutes procyonoides in family Canidae). The physical resemblance which lends them their English name is superficial.
- Pine-Light from the Folklore of the United States
- The Abenaki tribe of eastern North America also consider the raccoon a trickster figure in their mythology, known as Azeban.[1] They also feature in Choctaw tales.
