List of cities in Latvia

There are 77 cities in Latvia (Latvian: Pilsētas). By Latvian law city rights are granted to settlements that are centers of culture and manufacturing with well developed social infrastructure and public utilities, and have at least 2,000 residents; however in special cases, if the settlement fulfils all other requirements, towns with fewer citizens can be designated cities.
The cities are further divided into regional cities (Latvian: Rajonu pilsētas) and republican cities (Latvian: Republikas pilsētas) more commonly known as major cities (Latvian: Lielpilsētas). To become a major city, a city must have well developed industry, transport, public utilities and social infrastructure or be significant center of culture and social care, if the city has at least 50,000 residents. Again, however, in special cases, if settlement fulfils all other requirements, cities with fewer citizens can be designated major cities.
