List of brown dwarfs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

List of brown dwarfs

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first free-floating brown dwarf discovered is Teide 1 in 1995. The first brown dwarf discovered that orbits a star is Gliese 229B, also discovered in 1995. The first brown dwarf to have a planet is 2M1207, discovered in 2004.

Since a brown dwarf mass is between a planet and star, it is also called planetar or hyperjovian. The designation starts with lower case 'b' or upper case 'B' if the brown dwarf orbit the parent primaries.

The following is the list of 38 brown dwarfs out of 608 total brown dwarfs. Although some extrasolar planets can turn to brown dwarfs since most have only minimum masses because their inclination of the orbit is not known. The more massive the extrasolar planet is, the more likely it’ll turn to brown dwarf. Examples include HD 114762 b (>11.68 MJ), Pi Mensae b (>10.312 MJ), HD 136118 b (>11.99 MJ), and NGC 2423-3 b (>10.6 MJ).
